RADFORD UNIVERSITY STUDENT CREATIVE WRITERS

WIN A SCHOLARSHIP 

TO THE APPALACHIAN WRITERS WORKSHOP

AND STUDY WITH FAMOUS WRITERS

 The Rita Riddle Scholarship will be awarded to one Radford University student to fund his or her tuition and board to the Appalachian Writers Workshop in Hindman, KY ($800 value). Also, the winners will be given scholarships to attend the Southern Appalachian Writers Cooperative’s annual fall workshop ($250 value).

This is your chance to improve your writing and learn from great writers. It’s also a chance to join a community of writers from throughout the region.

The Appalachian Writers Workshop will be July 28-August 2, 2013. The teaching staff includes: Fenton Johnson, Holly Goddard Jones, Tony Crunk, Silas House, and Gurney Norman among others. Barbara Kingsolver will give the keynote address.

The Southern Appalachian Writers Cooperative (SAWC) workshop will take place October 18-20, 2013 (Highlander Center, New Market, TN). For more information about these workshops, visit   http://www.hindmansettlement.org and   http://www.sawconline.org

Submit your best work in one genre only and indicate that genre on the cover letter. Limit your manuscript submission to the following number of pages:

Novel, Memoir (20 or less)

Nonfiction, Short Story (10-15)

Poetry (10 poems, no more than 15 pages)

All manuscripts should be double-spaced (except poetry), with one-inch margins, 12-point type and no unusual fonts. Submit three copies of your manuscript with your name on only one copy (two copies should have no names). Previous winners are not eligible.

Submission Deadline: March 7, 2013

Award Notification: April 19, 2013

Cover sheet should include: Name, Address, Email, Phone Numbers, RU ID#, Genre of Submission. Submit work to Loren Phillips, English Department Secretary, Russell 142.

This scholarship does not include transportation. Carpooling may be available, but cannot be guaranteed. If selected, the student must be free July 28-August 2, 2013, and be responsible for his or her own transportation to Hindman, KY.
